5 Easy Ways To Clean Up Your Messy Gmail Inbox

5 Easy Ways to Clean Up Your Messy Gmail Inbox

Tips and tricks for getting your inbox down to zero — and keeping it that way

It’s alarmingly easy to let your Gmail inbox spiral out of control. Going too long without deleting messages could make it nearly impossible to sift through your overflowing email account.

There are, however, a few steps you can take to keep your inbox from becoming unmanageable. Here are a few tips:

Use Labels. If you have one primary Gmail account that includes all of your personal messages and work-related content, you’ll want to take advantage of Gmail’s labels feature. This allows you to organize emails into categories the same way you would put files on your computer into folders. To create a label in Gmail, click the “More” button on the lefthand side on your inbox and select “Create new label.”

Turn on Send & Archive. When you’re done with a conversation, there’s no need to give it precious real estate in your inbox. Gmail has a feature called Send & Archive, which automatically archives an email thread as soon as you reply to an email. Just click the small gear icon that appears in the upper right hand corner of the Gmail interface, press the “Settings” button, and look for the “Send and Archive” subsection. Click the bubble that says “Show Send & Archive button in reply.”

Add the “Mark as Read” Button. If you’ve got tons of emails coming in from friends and coworkers, you may not want to archive or delete them right away. If you want to quickly mark a batch of emails as read, you’ll probably want to add the “Mark as Read” button to your toolbar. To do this, navigate to “Settings” and click on the “Labs” tab. Then scroll down to the “Mark as Read Button” and click “Enable.”

Try a Third-Party App. Using features built into Gmail can only help so much when it comes to making your inbox as manageable as possible. Some third party apps take care of other pain points and inconveniences. Mailstrom, for instance, can identify bundles of related emails so that it becomes easier to delete unwanted messages in bulk. Unroll.Me consolidates newsletters, promotions, and other subscription emails into a single message to prevent your inbox from becoming too cluttered.

Purge Your Inbox in Your Spare Time. These tools and apps certainly make the process easier, but maintaining a clean inbox still requires some amount of effort. The best way to keep emails from piling up is to make the conscious effort to delete or mark emails as read as often as possible in your spare time. For instance, getting into the habit of sorting through emails when you’ve got 10 minutes to kill before a meeting can really make a difference.

Software With The Most Vulnerabilities In 2015: Mac OS X, Ios, And Flash

Which software had the most publicly disclosed vulnerabilities this year? The winner is none other than Apple’s Mac OS X, with 384 vulnerabilities. The runner-up? Apple’s iOS, with 375 vulnerabilities.

Rounding out the top five are Adobe’s Flash Player, with 314 vulnerabilities; Adobe’s AIR SDK, with 246 vulnerabilities; and Adobe AIR itself, also with 246 vulnerabilities. For comparison, last year the top five (in order) were: Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Apple’s Mac OS X, the Linux Kernel, Google’s Chrome, and Apple’s iOS.

These results come from CVE Details, which organizes data provided by the National Vulnerability Database (NVD). As its name implies, the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) system keeps track of publicly known information-security vulnerabilities and exposures.

Here is the 2015 list of the top 50 software products in order of total distinct vulnerabilities:

You’ll notice that Windows versions are split separately, unlike OS X. Many of the vulnerabilities across various Windows versions are the same, so there is undoubtedly a lot of overlap. The argument for separating them is probably one of market share, though that’s a hard one to agree to, given that Android and iOS are not split into separate versions. This is the nature of CVEs.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Linux kernel is separate from various Linux distributions. This is likely because the Linux kernel can be upgraded independently of the rest of the operating system, and so its vulnerabilities are split off.

If we take the top 50 list of products and categorize them by company, it’s easy to see that the top three are Microsoft, Adobe, and Apple:

Keep in mind that tech companies have different disclosure policies for security holes. Again, this list paints a picture of the number of publicly known vulnerabilities, not of all vulnerabilities, nor of the overall security of a given piece of software.

If you work in IT, or are generally responsible for the security of multiple systems, there are some obvious trends to keep in mind. Based on this list, it’s clear you should always patch and update operating systems, browsers, and Adobe’s free products.

5. Quora

You can learn almost anything on Quora from experts and recognized people, as well as not-so-famous people. This is a question-answer platform where users ask and answer questions. Amazing Things You Didn’t Know Your iPhone Could Do/ Tips for making perfect use of your iphone

Your iPhone can do all sorts of magical things that you probably aren’t aware of. Here’s a list of some of the iPhone’s coolest hidden features.

1. Shake to undo

ake a mistake while typing or editing a picture? No worries! Just give your phone a little shake—like you’re making a martini— and it’ll ask you if you’d like to undo the action. Cheers!

2. Recharge your battery faster by switching to airplane mode

Switching to airplane mode turns off battery-draining wireless and cellular access, allowing your phone to recharge up to twice as fast.

3. Get Siri to read your emails aloud for you

ust say the magic words “Read my email” and Siri will read all your messages aloud to you. If you like, you can tell her to read only your most recent email (“Read my latest email”) or just those from a specific contact (“Do I have email from Mark?”).
Check your Siri setup >>> General

4. Find out which planes are flying overhead

Just ask her: “What flights are above me?” Or you can be even more blunt and just say, “Planes overhead.” Boom! She’ll bring up a list that shows all the flights above you at that moment. Why you would ever need this I have no idea, but it’s pretty rad anyway

5. Teach Siri how to pronounce words

The best part about this is that it makes you feel smarter than Siri. Whenever Siri mispronounces something, just tell her, “That’s not how you pronounce [BLANK]” and she’ll offer you alternatives. You can then select the best one.

6. Take a photo with the volume buttons

Sometimes it’s hard to snap a picture by touching the capture button—if you’re wearing gloves, say—in which case, you can take the shoot by pressing either the volume up or the volume down button. Problem solved!

7. Reveal time-stamps on text messages

Drag the text bubble to the left and you’ll see a time-stamp for every text message. Among other things, this will show you just how much time you waste texting.

8. Use your iPhone as a level

Need to hang a picture? In the Compass app, swipe left and your iPhone becomes a perfect level.

9. Make your iPhone speak selected text

I like to use this one randomly just to freak people out. First you have to enable Speak Selection. To do that go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speak Selection and turn it on. A “Speak” button will now appear whenever you select text. Bonus: you can also choose different accents (would you prefer an Aussie iPhone?) and even control the speed at which selected text is spoken. Trust me, you can waste a lot of time with this one.

10. Start a new sentence just by double-tapping the spacebar

Whenever you’re typing and you need to start a new sentence, just double-tap the spacebar and it will automatically add a period and a space for you.

11. Create custom keyboard shortcuts

Say there’s a certain word or phrase (or a password) that you use a lot. You can create a shortcut for it. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts/Test Replacement > Add New Shortcut. Enter a word or phrase and the shortcut you’d like to use for it. Every time you type that shortcut, the whole word or phrase will magically appear. You can even create shortcuts for emoji!

12. Set your phone to emit light flashes for alerts

Instead of having your iPhone ring or vibrate when you get a call or a message, you can have it emit an LED flash. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility, then scroll down and turn on “LED Flash for Alerts.” Warning: it’s REALLY bright!

Enjoy and share:)
Happy New Year!!!
